About Relate
Relate is the UK's best-known provider of relationship counselling and the national specialist in intimate relationships. Every year we deliver high-quality counselling and therapeutic services to thousands of clients, making it possible for more people to make informed, realistic choices about love, sex and relationships.
We are committed to practice that is non-judgemental, culturally sensitive, and responsive to the diverse backgrounds, identities and lived experiences of our clients.
Relate sits within Family Action, a national charity that has supported people through change, challenge and crisis for 150 years. The family charity and the relationship specialists - together we are stronger.
Our clinical culture is grounded in reflective practice, ethical rigour and a genuine respect for the complexity of intimate relationships.
We are now growing our clinical team and are recruiting to multiple Relate Counsellor roles and three Clinical Supervisor roles (please see our other advert for the Counsellor roles, ID 1886). Whether your strength lies in direct therapeutic work with individuals and couples, or in supporting and developing other practitioners through supervision, this is an opportunity to be part of the UK's leading relationship counselling service at a pivotal moment of growth and transformation.
This role is for you if…
• You are committed to safe, ethical and inclusive practice shaped by client need.
• You value reflective practice and see supervision as central to doing your best work.
• You are confident working with complexity and risk and know when and how to escalate concerns.
• You bring a psychodynamic and systemic understanding of relationships to your work.
• You want to help shape the future of relationship therapy at national scale.
About the Clinical Supervisor Role
As a Clinical Supervisor, reporting to our Clinical Practice Lead, you will provide clinical supervision to Relate practitioners, upholding our clinical standards and nurturing a culture of reflective practice and learning. You will be a key source of specialist safeguarding guidance, helping counsellors work safely and confidently with high-risk and complex cases.
Hours and working pattern: We are recruiting three Clinical Supervisors at 20 hours per week each. There is no set working pattern for these roles.
You will:
• Deliver regular individual and group clinical supervision, including facilitating case supervision groups.
• Provide specialist guidance on safeguarding and risk, and support counsellors with complex, high-risk and ethically challenging cases.
• Carry out case note reviews and audits, and work with Practice Managers on six-monthly counsellor reviews.
• Contribute to complaint investigations, serious incident reviews and safeguarding audits, making sure learning is embedded in practice.
• Support counsellors to reflect on power, bias, identity and difference, and contribute to training that strengthens inclusive practice.
• Contribute to service evaluations, quality reviews and clinical meetings that inform how our services develop.
About You
(for full details, see the job description and person specification)
You will bring:
• A Level 5 / Column B (or above) qualification in Relationship Therapy and a qualification in Counselling Supervision, from Relate or an equivalent provider.
• Accredited, full clinical membership of a recognised professional body (e.g. BACP, UKCP, NCPS, COSRT).
• Significant post-qualifying experience in couple counselling and sex therapy, including providing supervision and/or oversight of clinicians’ caseloads.
• In-depth knowledge of safeguarding legislation, ethical frameworks and quality assurance in therapeutic settings.
• A strong track record in supervision and clinical governance, and the credibility to build trusting professional relationships.
• Confidence using data, insight and evaluation to drive clinical practice.
A postgraduate (Level 7) qualification in a relevant field, or a published contribution to the development of therapy, would be an advantage.
We would welcome hearing from Clinical Supervisors who are trained to work with families and/or young people (YP), or who would be interested in training.
